I don't understand why this book is as popular as it is. Don't get me wrong though....it is still worth it. I just don't think its the best. I read the whole book and it helped me review the medicine in General. It's the excellent number of cases that works but they don't go into the detail I would like. If you have few people to practice with it is not intuitive for your "examiner" to administer. I wish they listed the doses as they went (if it is a medicine we should have memorized) and for the burn case they had they didn't even say what percentage of burn they calculated. True, this is all stuff you could look up in other books but I want to know about THAT case. The little review of high yield facts is good. I think they best book is First Aid for the oral boards and was really hoping a new edition would come out. It is the best for using with another person (especially if your examiner has less medical background). First Aid lists, over and over, exactly what you should say and goes in great detail (sometimes painfully so) for each case. I felt first aid book is ideal for initial study. This book though is an excellent addition to the First Aid book. If you have little time get First Aid, if more get BOTH. I did not try Rivers. I took the review course in Chicago Illinois ACEP; it was AMAZING. It was intense but worth it. I figure anyone reading this review is looking for oral board study material advice :)
One word: Effective. However, not sure if this is the most up-to-date way to do the boards. For example: I don't think we still need to put everyone on oxygen, like this book still recommends for all acute status patients. It also does not have the triple patient cases that are on the boards. I literally just got my result today: BOARD CERTIFIED EM DOC! So obviously, the book is good enough. I only used this and practiced occasionally with friends: overall, gets the job done. Every single patient I had on the boards was in this book.
My wife used this to pass her EM boards recently. I played examiner for many of these cases, and it was easy for me to help her study despite the fact that I'm not an ER doc. Some medical background is probably very helpful if you plan to play "examiner" and help someone with the cases. Plenty of cases were included, and there is good detail on what would be considered "critical actions" versus other points to know. It was sometimes hard to show EKGs or imaging pictures without showing the rest of the text to give the case away, but easily remedied with a piece of scratch paper.
This book was very helpful because it features an introduction that explains the format of the oral boards and how best to take advantage of the practice cases. I was able to go through these cases on my own, reading through them solo (not the best way to practice for an oral exam, but you've gotta do what you've gotta do), and they kept me interested and entertained, taught me a few new things and got me comfortable with the format. I had some actual oral boards cases that I applied some of this book's learning points to and that were extremely similar to cases in this book... which made it completely worth the investment.
I got the letter today stating that I am a fully board - certified emergency medicine physician as declared by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and this book had a large part in that. It's 100 and some - odd very high - yield cases and related material. It's set up, ideally, for 2 people in a patient - doctor encounter; however, one person can easily make do (as I did). Each chapter begins with a fully scripted case and dialogue. Following the case is a brief review of the material and pearls to be aware of. The figures are all very relevent and clear. Also noted are several "critical actions," essentially all of which must be met for a passing score on the exam. I was totally prepared for the exsm and can honestly say that of the hundreds of exams I've taken in the last 10 years, I knew I passed this one beyond a shadow of a doubt. Several of the oral board cases seemed to be taken directly from this book. For one of the cases on the real thing, there was a very subtle nuance that needed to be addressed or the fictional patient would have deteriorated rapidly and likely died. Without this book, I'm pretty sure I would have missed it. My only criticisms (and they're relatively minor) are would be the lack of OB cases; although, this is not highly represented on the real exam, so in the end it didn't really make a difference. My formula: I went through each case thoroughly 3 times over the course of 3 months and did the AAEM review course (also highly recommended) and nailed every single case. I probably would have passed with the book alone, but the course was great for the timing of the exam. Believe me when I say I've seen every oral board review book out there and this simply is a class above the rest. Do yourself a favor, know that you will easily pass if you have this book down pat. Thanks for reading.
The only book you need to study for orals. I sorta non- chalantly flipped through this book over about 7 days prior to exam and it taught me the tricks and traps of the game better than any class. I would highly recommend you rent if and then once done return it.
I used the book, now i'm board certified. Doesn't prove causality but hey, worked for me and many of my partners. This was my only study material, I ran through cases over coffee or beer with other faculty. Didn't do a review course, so I consider this a sufficient single resource.
