We used this book extensively on our recent trip to Portland to determine which day trips we did and did not want to take. Overall, it was very helpful. My only complaint would be about the day trip that included the various falls trails along the Columbia River Parkway. We spent two days doing the various hikes in that area. The author mentioned the Oneonata Trail hike as one that was worth doing if one had the time. I find it hard to believe she ever actually did this hike, because it was considerably more difficult than any of the others listed., and the "payoff" at the end didn't seem worth the effort of getting to it! Other than that, we found lots of good information about restaurants, shops, and attractions.
As a frequent Northwest vacationer, I have many regional travel books that I've collected over the years, but I found this relatively new volume a very useful addition in planning my travels in the Portland area this summer. It was a great time-saving tool in setting up itineraries for day trips outside of the city. Each destination is briefly, but accurately, described and clear driving directions, along with recommendations for what to see, where to eat, shop, and perhaps lodge are nicely summarized. This book is not intended as a highly specific travel or hiking guide...there are other books for that. However, the author does provide lots of travel-related contacts in the introductory and appendix sections. And of course, there are lots of web-based sources for more detailed information about each of these possible destinations. A very practical addition to my travel library!
This is a terrific book for anyone about to travel to Portland, Oregon. We just came back from 9 days there and we used this book constantly. We took one day trip from Portland to see the various waterfalls east of town. But it came in handy when we stayed in Hood River and then Rockaway Beach on the coast. The maps were great and we found quite a few out of the way places to see when driving to these locations. I doubt we would have known about the terrific tour and tasting at the SakeOne brewery in Forest Grove had we not seen it in this book. The recommendations for parks and trails were very helpful. This is a must have if you're planning a trip to Oregon.
Last week my husband and I had about 36 hours to spend on/near Mt. Hood. The chapter called "The Slopes of Mt Hood" was JUST what we needed! We used Findling's recommendations for routes, a wonderful overnight lodging, an amazing dinner at a restaurant we never would have discovered, plus great outdoor sightseeing and hikes. We could NOT have done this on our own, and the experience made us want to try every day trip in the book.AND, as our rabid reader granddaughter said, when she was browsing through the book, "She writes so fun!"

This book came in very helpful when our Spanish exchange student was here. We discovered places we had never been. Love taking day trips so I can still sleep in my own bed.
Locations of places and the areas that are within reach are great.The info on restaurants is very good and other actively.
We spent a month in Portland this past summer and are planning to relocate there in a few years. We used many of the trips listed in the book and have some wonderful memories. Thank you!
