I was disappointed in the book. It didn't give practical examples or help me in any way. I did not see answers to questions such as: how to close a window; how to make the tabs larger when in Safari (They are very small and hard to see); what do the function keys on the keyboard do (He refers the reader to a website to learn about that--why not give an illustration in the book?); how does one get Microsoft "Word" on the Imac so old documents can be edited; etc. I think this is a case where the author knows his subject but does not understand the needs of his audience. There are many, many people who are expert on computers who teach or write like that.
USELESS! This book has been absolutely no help!!! I recently switched from PC to iMac & thought I needed this. ha I have used a Dummies book in the past & it was very helpful. This, however, was a big waste of money!!!I cannot find anything in the index re: what I need help with...so guess it's either not in the book or hidden mysteriously under a "search word" I can't think of. Explanations assume you have some massive knowledge of computer language. SAVE YOUR MOENY!
I have been enjoying this book as I learn my way around my two iMacs and multiple MacBook Pros. I've learned quite a bit and have been highlighting as I go. When I've finished the book, I'll go back and re-read my highlights.I have a number of Dummies books and can always count on them for solid information and a bit of wry humor. Humor is subjective, sure; I get that. But some of the humor in this book is too mean-spirited toward Windows computers and the people who own them. I owned a computer business for years and can tell you firsthand that there are plenty of things that Windows on a good hardware setup does better or more easily than a Mac, so I find the Windows bashing to be a bit heavy-handed and unfounded. Having said that, there's plenty to like about the Mac ecosystem, too, so I wish that a Mac and a PC would get a cheap motel room and have a baby together that contained the best of both worlds.Even with my niggle over the sometimes tone of the book, which is why I awarded four stars, I still recommend it, as Mr. Chambers has done a good job of illuminating the ins and outs of the iMac in particular and the iOS way of life in general.
Bought a Mac, loved the look of it, but struggled a bit as it works a little differently than Windows/PC. This book made me fall in love with my new Mac. Easy to follow, fun to use.
Even considering that my computer is at least a generation or two older than the book, I found iMac for Dummies quite useful. This is my first Apple computer, which I have found to be a wonderful program for helping with Mac. It gives extra help when I need it, and the ease it has for solving riddles and explanations for the processes is quite good. I keep it handy at my desk and refer to it quite often. It's become my my favorite bible for finding answers for what I do. I'm very glad I have it.
Am only up to page 63 and I have learned absolutely nothing useful.It's incredibly wordy with a superfluous amount of babble that supersedes cutting to the chase. He takes a whole page to waffle on about a feature that could have been usefully explained with a picture and a short caption.If you want a great example of waffle - this book is it. If you want a great example of 'telling' and 'explaining', rather than 'showing' and 'demonstrating' - this book is it. It also doesn't cover the latest model iMac.Skip this book. Mine's getting donated to Goodwill tomorrow.
This book is fine for real "dummies", but it does not answer many questions, for example, how to create a directory, how to import external files to the selected directories. It keeps on talking about how great iMac is (I agree with that) but it fails to give me an idea of what iMac is, how to use the existing software in it, etc.
Very good find on Amazon. Very comprehensive and I'm sure will come in handy.....at some point. Only giving 4 stars right now because I really haven't had to use it much. Set up for the MAC is pretty straight forward even for a first time user like me. But the Quick Reference Guide a purchased at the same time as this has been very useful and has come in quite handy several times. I almost would recommend buying it over iMac for dummies but if for some reason something should go wrong with the system.....you may need something more comprehensive.
