Review
A USA Today bestseller!Praise for Owl Diaries #1:"Bright and colorful digital illustrations, large type, frequent speech bubbles and a familiar story make this accessible to emerging readers.…This series promises to fill a niche for [new readers.] Keep flapping, Eva!" -- Kirkus"Appealing visuals (the text and art are set against the lined pages of Eva's diary), punny dialogue, a few pratfalls, and Eva's unflagging enthusiasm make for lively reading." -- Publishers Weekly"This early chapter book is a nice step between first readers and series such as Barbara Parks's 'Junie B. Jones' and Mary Pope Osborne's 'Magic Tree House.'" -- School Library Journal

{My thoughts} – In this book Eva goes to bed after leaving her bedroom window open. When she wakes up her pet bat is missing. He apparently flew out the window after she’d went to sleep. At school they are suppose to write a story and then submitting it for a contest. Eva can’t concentrate on anything but her missing pet. All her classmates band together and help her look for him. The look everywhere, while still working on their stories.Eventually they find him and rescue him. Eva is so happy to have him back that she’s finally able to work on and complete her story. The next night at school they all read their stories for the contest.I really enjoy these books. They have colorful illustrations, simple stories and nice little lessons within the pages. I also like how at the end of each book their are discussion questions that can be used to further discuss the readers understanding of the book.
My granddaughter (age 7) loves this series and I have bought every one for her since she has been reading on her own. She reads them over and over. They are so cute. I had to explain what a diary is to her since she didn't quite get the format, but once I told her she really like it. I bought her an owl journal for her to record her own adventures.
The Owl Diaries are a perfect series for my second graders who are diving into chapter books but aren't into pages without pictures. The owl, Eva has the cutest adventures with her friends, the text is easy to read and the illustrations are so cute. I like the way they diagram some of the illustrations to mix it up.I would say about a 1-2nd grade level. Buy the whole series, your kid will get hooked!
Got this for my 8 year old who started reading Owl Diaries in kindergarten. It's a very easy read for her but she loves the series. It was this series that helped her transition to chapter books. It made chapter books less intimidating and more interesting to her as it's colorful and still has pictures.
I can't say enough about this exciting "chapter book" series for beginning readers. If the child has older siblings, he/she already knows about the "diary" books for older kids. Our 6 year old laughs out loud at the clever "bird related" ideas. The books offer just enough challenge with new vocabulary words to allow the reader to progress with their ability. We have all 6 books and preordered # 7.
My 1st grader started the Owl Diaries series at the beginning of the year, and was thrilled to receive the newest installment today! As a mom it makes me so happy to see her excited about reading! These books are super adorable and fun!! At this point in the school year they aren't challenging for her, but she likes that she can sit and read one in under 20 minutes! These books are a great first "chapter" book series to help build confident in young readers and to really build a love for reading!!!
Wonderful book for my little one! It's a great book for beginning readers and the illustrations are awesome!
My daughter is in love with these books!! The comic book type style they are written in is the best. She wakes uo early to read these books and brings them in the car- this has never happened before, it is so so great to see. Please come out with more!!
