I purchased Pruning Made Easy Pruning Made Easy: A Gardener's Visual Guide to When and How to Prune Everything, from Flowers to Trees (Storey's Gardening Skills Illustrated Series) knowing little about pruning but clearly had over an acre of stuff that really needed it. It's is a good book for those that want a basic summary and not too much detail and that works fine for me. However, I had to give it 4 stars because I now have something to compare it to. I recently picked up this book at a yard sale and it's by far the better book and it does offer a lot more detail than some may want. It's in color while the other book is B&W and the color pics are of some help and it gets 5 stars. Strangely, both books are at odds with each other on several subjects of interest to me such as to when the optimum time to prune is for grapes, lilacs and fruit trees. I'm in the high desert with hot summers, long cold winters and freeze dates in May & September pretty much the norm. I find it pretty ambiguous when a book states to prune something in mid-winter but not when it's so cold that it may be too cold sap loss from a grape cold be too much... and that was in both books. I honestly can't say one is better than the other but I find now that having both is better. If I had to recommend one over the other this would have to be the one.
My husband used this as his "go to" pruning book. His son, also an avid gardenerthreatened to "misappropriate" the book during a visit. I bought him his own copy, and he loves it. My husband died a few months ago, so the local horticultururalistlooked in on the orchard and other trees, shrubs and roses. He perused the book during a break, saying how comprehensive it was: for beginners to those in the profession. I bought him this book for Christmas in appreciation for all he had done. The new paperback version is as comprehensive as the hardback version, and now more affordable for those wanting "The Ultimate Guide" to pruning and training. If you do any pruning, this is definitely a "BUY"!!!
This is the most helpful pruning book I have found, ever! Very comprehensive and for the home gardener, a must. Whether you are a gardener just starting out or a seasoned 'expert', this book with great picutres and illistrations guides you through what to do and when to do it. The book is catagorized in a way you can find the type of shrub or tree, bush or vine you need to review and then the directions are very clear. I recommend this book whole-heartedly.
The strength of this book is in the solid way the information is presented - anyone from the greenest beginner to the most experienced pro will find information in here that is practical and useful. The book is arranged into sections - general pruning information and techniques, with excellent, full color diagrams, photos, and thorough text explaining every tip and technique they show. The section on rose pruning, for example, has photos of roses trained in different ways, diagrams of different kinds of tangled roses which need pruning (with shading to show which stems they'd remove and keep, and the angles and positions of each cut), and explanatory text detailing exactly why each branch was cut, the theory behind the mechanics, and some tips to keep in mind when you get outside with your pruning shears. Then there is the encyclopedia portion - divided into types of plants - like trees, shrubs, fruiting shrubs, etc. If you know the name of what you are trying to prune, you can get detailed information on how to renovate an old gnarled shrub, how to train a new one, and how to give an existing plant shape and a nice form. Each plant has accurate information on whether you can cut it to the ground, prune to hard wood, and what training and pruning techniques are successful on each type of plant.I have been a landscaper for over ten years, doing design and maintenance, and this book is one I carry with me every spring when I do my seasonal pruning jobs - if there is a plant that I have never hard pruned or renovated before, I just look it up quickly to check which techniques are successful on which plants, and it has never guided me wrongly. If you'd like to begin caring for your own plants, this is one of the top books you should pick up. Disabato-Aust's The Well-Tended Perennial Garden is another good one, for after you have learned some of the techniques presented here.
I find trees and shrubs to be fascinating members of the landscape. I would that I could plant as many landscape trees as I have fallen forest trees in my half dozen years of being a timberfaller in Washington State. That probably won't happen, but I can dream. So, what of this book? This book speaks to a number of types of shrubs and trees and methods of trimming and makes me wonder what would application of these various techniques look like in our landscape if I were to embark on a concerted program of purchasing and modifying the many trees and shrubs illustrated in this book? This book is inspirational to me. This book illustrates seasonal trimming practices and offers appropriate suggestions for specific techniques to apply to specific species. No sense in reinventing the wheel, when practical instruction is available. A really nice book.
Great BIG book on pruning and training plants to go the way you want them. Lots of info and drawings and covers a wide variety of plants. I researched many different options and really glad I bought this one for an overall bible on the subject. Easy to read, clear print, sturdy paper, esthetically pleasing as a bonus to the good material within.
Covers pruning, trimming, shaping, training on multiple plant types. Has a lot of very valuable information about plants, trees, planting, growing, on and on. A wealth of information. Color photos, diagrams.Liked it so much I then bought a second as a gift. Recommended.Arrived quickly and packed properly along with other items.
